Frequently Asked Questions

How do you make a perfect cup of coffee?

Use the correct amount and the right type of coffee grounds for the equipment used in brewing. Most home style auto drip makers use 1 tablespoon of auto drip grind for every 6 ounces of water. If the grind is too coarse the water will run through too rapidly and may be weak. If the grind is too fine, the coffee may be too strong. Water purity and hardness is important. Start with cold tap filtered water. Ideal brewing temperature is 190-195 degrees. Brew only as much coffee as you need and serve immediately. Coffee left on the warmer or reheated will be bitter.

Which decaffeinated method is used for your coffee?

We use coffees decaffeinated by a patented German process as well as by the Swiss Water method. These commonly used and popular methods leave no chemical residues and produces a coffee at least 99.7% caffeine free

What is the nutritional value of coffee?

All of our flavored and non-flavored coffees have no more calories than found in coffee itself – about 7 calories per cup without cream and sugar. There are no fats, cholesterol, gluten, whey, sugars or carbohydrates in coffee . All of the ingredients used to flavor our coffees are allergen free and aflatoxin free and are all regarded as safe by FEMA or Flavoring Extract Manufacturing Association and FDA or Food and Drug Administration.

What’s the best way to store coffee?

Once the bag is opened, it’s best to store coffee in an airtight container in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight. We recommend you use the coffee within two weeks. Be careful where you store your coffee, since coffee tends to absorb most odors. Unopened bags have a shelf life of one year.

Why are some LION coffee bags hard like a brick and some are fluffy with air?

We vacuum pack our Lion Coffees in a plastic coated multi-ply aluminum bag which has a freshness valve which allows natural gases that come off of freshly roasted coffee to escape. This valve is one way; it won’t allow any air back into the bag, preserving the freshness of the coffee. Generally, the brick hard bags may become fluffy in a few days after packaging. Sometimes in air travel, the differential in pressure in the unpressurized cargo cabin will literally suck the gasses out of the bag, making the bag brick hard again. The hardness or fluffiness of the bag is not an indication of its freshness or age. Our products have a one year shelf life.
